Rhodesian Ridgeback General Appearance:

Their short, glossy coat is distinctive because of the ridge of fur on their back that grows forward, hence the name “ridgeback.” They weigh up to 85 pounds, and measure up to 27 inches from the withers. They have a lean frame with powerful shoulders. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are red in color.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is strong-willed, loyal, dignified, and intelligent. Despite their size and strength, they’re sensitive dogs who should never be handled roughly. Positive reinforcement from someone they love and trust is the best way to train a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They’re devoted to their families and very protective. With the right training, they make excellent guard dogs.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Fun Fact:

As you may be able to guess by their name, Rhodesian Ridgebacks hail from Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe. They were used as hunting dogs to deter lions from a kill until their owners showed up. They were previously called African Lion Dogs.
