German Wirehaired Pointer General Appearance

The German Wirehaired Pointer — also called the German Wirehair Pointer or Deutsch Drahthaar in German — is a hunting dog with classic pointer features: they have a medium-sized, athletic build, almond-shaped eyes, a short, straight back, long legs, round, webbed feet, and a partially docked tail. German Wirehaired Pointers are just slightly taller and heavier than their close relative, the German Shorthaired Pointer.

This breed is known for their beard, whiskers, eyebrows, large brown nose, webbed feet, and wiry, weather-resistant double coat (which is typically liver or liver and white). German Wirehaired Pointers weight 45 to 75 pounds and stand 21 to 26 inches tall.

German Wirehaired Pointer Temperament

The German Wire-haired Pointer is affectionate, lively, devoted, and intelligent. They are friendly with people they know, but Drahthaar puppies should be socialized early on to get accustomed to strangers and other dogs. German Wirehaired Pointers love their humans! They're most happy when they're part of the family. Wirehaired Pointers are well-behaved and very creative, but they need plenty of exercise to burn off their energy!

German Wirehaired Pointer Fun Fact
