Canine Cancer: Not Necessarily a Death Sentence
We have had two pets with cancer and one of the best resources we have found on the subject is 'Help Your Dog Fight Cancer' by Laurie Kaplan.
"Experts say that 50 percent of our dogs will have cancer, yet most of us know little or nothing about caring for a dog with cancer. Not long ago, admittedly, there wasn't much to know. Today, however, treatment for canine cancer is nearly on a par with treatment for human cancer and there is a great deal to know." (excerpt from the book)
This book provides
- Guidance in making sound decisions at the vet's office - decisions that make sense for both the dog and the caretaker.
- An overview of traditional veterinary testing options and treatment options and of holistic home-care options for a dog with cancer.
- An explanation of chemotherapy: the various types, how it works, the side effects and their remedies.
We first saw this book at our oncologist's office, and were so impressed with the wealth of information that we decided to carry it.

- "Since the 1960s, Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has conducted innovative cancer research and provided state-of-the-art treatment for companion animals. The program has evolved from research that identified the types of cancers affecting pets, to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in animals. Over the years, pioneering work done by the staff of the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University has led to advances in the treatment of human cancers. Veterinary faculty also have explored the field of dietary supplements that support cancer treatments and, improved and refined the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for pets. The areas of complementary and alternative medicine are increasingly important aspects of ongoing cancer research. The Shipley Natural Healing Center will focus on the scientific evaluation of a broad range of natural medicines and therapies."

Innovative New Therapies
- Immuno-Augmentative Therapy (IAT): "In conjunction with the Metabolic Nutritional Analysis program, our IAT program is available for patients with cancer and severely depressed immune systems. It is a well accepted theory that cancer is a secondary condition stemming from a supressed immune system. IAT is directed not so much at the tumor / cancerous process, but on a more causative level, toward reestablishing the integrity of the damaged immune system. Beside being a therapeutic program, IAT also has the ability, through analytical blood testing, to be both diagnostic and prognostic, thus enhancing the monitoring of the patient. The IAT program consists of the routine administration of naturally isolated immune proteins by subcutaneous (under the skin) injections."
-- offered by Smith Ridge Veterinary Center
- Ozone Therapy: Based upon premise that this form of oxygen kills cancer cells but leaves normal cells alone. Offered by Smith Ridge Veterinary Center
- Electrophoresis: This has been used in people for a few years but is just now being used on animals. It's a different delivery method for chemotherapy. It is injected into the lymph node and electrical impulses are used to deliver it to the needed area. Has been used by the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado with Dr. Robyn Elmslie.
- Gene Therapy: Better for localized tumors. Has been used by the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado with Dr. Robyn Elmslie.
- The Veterinary Cancer Society: Find out about clinical trials and some of the latest research here.
- Vaccine Associated Sarcoma: Although this AVMA task force is studying the correlation between feline sarcoma and vaccines, there is much controvery about vaccines in general, feline or canine.
